Mardi Gras (Martes de Carnaval)

As a celebration of life in February or March before the more -somber occasion of Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras celebrations often include masks and costumes. The most popular celebration colors are purple, green, and gold. In New Orleans, costumes take the shape of fairies, animals, mythical figures and Medieval traditions. 

Cinco de Mayo

Celebrated annually, May 5th is the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire in 1862. Celebrations include parades, food, music, folklore dancing, and battle re-enactments. In Canada, pubs play and serve Mexican music and food.

Friendship Day / Día del Amigo

The idea of a “Global Friendship Day” was first proposed by Paraguay for July 30th, 1958. Other nations, like Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, celebrate Friendship Day on July 30th. In Ecuador and Venezuela, Friendship Day celebrations take place on July 14th. 

Day of the Dead / Día de los Muertos

Traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, other localities also celebrate on  October 31st or November 6th. Widely observed in Mexico, celebrations include preparing traditional dishes and creating home altars to remember the dead.

Quinceañera

A girl's 15th birthday, it has cultural roots in Mexico and is celebrated throughout Latin America. As traditions have evolved, the ceremony often includes a toast, first dance, family waltz, and the ceremony for the “Changing of Shoes.”
