Celebrated globally and often before Ash Wednesday, “Carnival” celebrations share European, African, Caribbean, and South American traditions. The largest Carnival celebrations are in Brazil. In Canada, “Carnival” celebrations take place in the summer and include the “Afro-Caribbean Festival, the “Caribbean Carnival” or “Caribana” in Toronto, or “Caribbean Days” in Vancouver. Carnival celebrates the heritage and talents of the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora and diversity.
From December 26th to January 1st, “Kwanzaa” celebrates African-American culture. Based on West and Southeast African harvest festival traditions, each day has a dedicated principle, including Unity, Determination, Collective Work, Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, and Creativity & Faith.
Taking place in early August, the “New Yam Festival” is an important celebration for communities throughout West Africa in Nigeria, Ghana, and beyond. As a yam symbolizes fertility and community success, the festival also marks the conclusion of a harvest cycle and the beginning of the next.
