Celebrated on June 21st or during the summer solstice, the occasion was first observed in Canada in 1996. It recognizes and celebrates the cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and Indigenous communities. The “National Indigenous Peoples Day” is a statutory holiday in the Northwest Territories and in Yukon.
A “Pow Wow” is a multi-generational celebration within many Indigenous communities. Today, Pow Wows are for community socializing, dancing, singing, and spiritual healing. Pow Wows may be private, indoors, outdoors, or opened to spectators across Canada.
In many Indigenous cultures, December 21st is the winter solstice – a time for prayer, reflection, and healing. Men, women, and community members share traditional responsibilities, like in gathering firewood. Many ceremonies include prayers, pipe ceremonies, feasts, and solstice stories.
